7-5/8" = 7 5/8" ???

Post by Scott H Jackson on Sat Aug 08, 2015 3:33 pm

In the text, a lot of the inch measurements use a hyphen between the inch and the fraction.

For example

7-5/8"

I checked online and noticed that it is much more common for inch measurements NOT to use the hyphen, however some sites do display the hyphen.

Do we want to leave them as-is (hyphenated) or remove the hyphen (but maintain a single space), as such:

7 5/8"

Any thoughts?

Scott, in this case, you have to remember that in this case what I think is probably correct is 7 5/8", because it is 7 inches and five eighths.

There is difference which is actually easy to detect when it is a range (implying a dash): 8 - 10" , that would mean it is between 8 and 10 inches, and you can detect it because the lower value is first (not so in 7 5/8").

I found several of those in mine.

Cheers, Max
